About The Near East Tour
We collect you from your hotel at 9.30am and drive to the gorgeous village of Dirleton with two village greens and a splendid ruined mediaeval castle at its heart. There is time to explore the castle and gardens and perhaps have a quick cup of coffee.
We leave Dirleton at 11.15am and arrive in North Berwick at 11.45am. North Berwick is a bustling seaside town with two sandy crescent-shaped beaches. There is an excellent seabird sanctuary which would be well worth a visit, or you could climb Berwick Law, a volcanic hill from which there are amazing views. This is an easy walk for anyone of reasonable fitness and quite achievable in the time. Finding somewhere for lunch will be no problem and you must try the famous Luca’s ice cream!
We leave North Berwick at 1.45pm and take the short drive to either Myreton Motor Museum, with its unique collection of vintage vehicles and period advertising material, or to the National Museum of Flight – the choice is yours. We have 1 and a half hours here.
After that we travel to the Royal Burgh of Haddington, the County Town of East Lothian. With its mediaeval and Georgian buildings, this is an architectural gem. We have 40 minutes here, enough to have a walk round the town, visit the 15thC St Mary’s Church, the largest parish church in Scotland, and perhaps have a cup of tea or fit in a little shopping.
We arrive back in Edinburgh at approximately 5.45pm.
East Lothian is renowned for its lovely beaches and coastal scenery. As we drive towards North Berwick we pass through the pretty villages of Aberlady and Gullane. You will be amazed at the number of golf courses along this route.
We have suggested including in the itinerary either the National Museum of Flight which is home to one of the few remaining Concordes, or Myreton Motor Museum, but if these do not appeal to you there are many alternatives. For instance you could choose to visit the grand 18thC Newhailes House and Gardens, the pretty Preston Mill, an 18th Century restored watermill, or Glenkinchie Distillery and/ or Belhaven Brewery in Dunbar. Dunbar is the birthplace of the famous ecologist John Muir, best known for establishing Yosemite National Park in the USA.
